Night: Deleted poolhouse scene with Quentin (David Selby) and Angelique (Lara Parker).
“It felt more like a Hollywood production than the first film did,” remembers John Karlen. “It was more professional.” Unlike House of Dark Shadows, every scene in Night of Dark Shadows would be shot on the Lyndhurst estate. Any additional sets were built on the grounds, including the cemetery and the scaffolding for the hanging scene. The gloomy basement of Collinwood was constructed and decorated in the abandoned stable. Night of Dark Shadows, like House of Dark Shadows, was shot entirely in the day, using “Day-for-Night” on any nocturnal scenes. For shooting inside, sheets of black cloth were once again hung outside the windows to make it appear that it was night outside.
“Dan wanted the flashbacks to have a different look than the modern sequences.” remembers Richard Shore. “I tried to make it a little softer, paler. For shots where Angelique was a ghost, I wrapped cloth around the lens to make the edges of the frame appear hazy and ghostly. The ghost attacks were stylized, using slow motion. The (deleted) Quentin and Angelique poolhouse makeout scene was supposed to be a dreamy fantasy, so we made it look wild, with colored lights, filters and fog.”
While shooting the opening of the film, rain began to fall as Quentin and Tracy arrive at Collinwood in a convertible. David Selby stopped the car, put the roof up and the remainder of the scene was filmed as if the rain had been planned.
Night of Dark Shadows was Kate Jackson’s first film. “It was very exciting. I was young and ready to do anything,” remembers Jackson. In one scene she is thrown into a filthy swimming pool. Jackson laughs such unpleasant experiences off. “All of us in the cast did little things that were scary. The scariest one for me was jumping off a horse, running. You had to keep your concentration so you wouldn’t get hurt.”
